Toyota’s V12-powered Porsche 928 on Cars & Bid is engine-swapping madness

Cars & Bids Auction Site Archived many cars swap engines since its launch in 2020, but This relatively modest-looking 1982 Porsche 928 one of the wildest builds we’ve seen so far. Small exterior modifications hide a big surprise under the hood: the V12 engine.

V8 swaps are quite common; V12 engine swaps are much more unusual, largely because the 12-cylinder group available is relatively small, and most cars aren’t designed with such large engines in mind. Here, sellers have omitted the usual suspects on the industry’s V12 shelf, such as the N74 offering late model variants of the BMW car 7 Series and select the 5.0-liter engine sourced from Toyota Century and is called 1GZ-FE.

It’s not a typo: Yes, there is a Toyota called Century and yes, that is was once equipped with a V12 . engine. It was never sold in the United States, it was mainly distributed in Japan where it was positioned as the flagship of the brand and the 1GZ-FE engine never appeared in another model, which makes this swap all the more unusual. The 5.0-liter engine has a 60-degree tilt, which might explain how the seller turned it into a 928 and a bit of internet detective work led us to a 20 page theme on the Rennlist enthusiasts forum records most of the swaps.

Stock, Century’s V12 engine develops around 283 horsepower and 354 pound-feet of torque, though most historians would agree those numbers are underestimated due to the gentlemen’s deal the major Japanese automakers embarked on in the late 1980s. In this 928, it features a number of modifications including its 3in, MS3Pro soundbar management system, and its completely independent MS3Pro exhaust system.

It gets better: While the Century is only offered with an automatic transmission, this 928’s cavalry drives to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission derived from the fifth generation Chevrolet Corvette. What we then had was a V12-powered 928, which was high on the list of sentences we never thought we’d write. The auction The description lists several other modifications, such as 18-inch wheels from one PanameraWillow brakeOne carbon fiber front splitter, one audio The rear spoiler is derived from the TT and the seats are from the 930-generation 911 Turbo.

Bid at $7,777 with six days left of the auction, so there’s plenty of time for that number to grow and the auction includes over 270 detailed photos and videos. And, this 928 is offered without reservation, meaning the highest bidder will take home a really, really cool build.

Here’s a hint for the winners: Few days left in the 2023 edition of the legendary Hot Wheels . tour.
