Hotel credit $50 annually

In August 2021, Chase reveals a bunch of exciting changes to its Sapphire card, including Sapphire Preferred. One of these new perks is a $50 statement credit for hotel stays purchased through Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal when opening the card, as well as on each subsequent card membership anniversary. It is automatically applied to your account each year when you make a qualifying fee. Note that the $50 credit does not earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

10% bonus points annually

Another change Chase added to the card is a 10% anniversary bonus. Cardholders will receive a 10% bonus based on their total spend during the account anniversary year at the rate of 1 point for every $10 spent. For example, if you spent $100,000 on the Sapphire Preferred during your five card memberships, you’ll receive 10,000 bonus points at the end of the year.

Note that this 10% is calculated on the amount you have spent, not the number of points you earn. Therefore, you do not get additional points by taking advantage of the card’s bonus categories.

DoorDash

Chase Sapphire Preferred also includes at least one year free DashPass membership with DoorDash, allowing you free shipping and reduced service fees on qualifying purchases. this is a costs associated with using a food delivery service such as DoorDash, but this can be a valuable benefit if you already use the service.

How to earn points

The Chasing my favorite Sapphire Go with a simple income structure, easy to maximize. Here’s how you earn points on the Sapphire Preferred:

  • 5 points per dollar of travel booked through Chase Travel Portal.
  • 5 points for every dollar on Buy Lyft (until the end of March 2025).
  • 3 points per dollar on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs).

Chase Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal

You can use your points to buy airline tickets, book hotels and even rent a car through chasing travel — all at a flat rate of 1.25 cents per point. That means you don’t have to worry about blackout dates or finding prize space; you will always have the option to book travel using your points. As long as there’s a seat for sale on the flight that you want, or a hotel room available for cash advance, you’ll be able to pay with your points.

Just be aware that hotel reservations booked through third-party sites (including Chase Travel) will generally not earn points and will not count towards elite status.

Transfer to Chase travel partners

More than 1.25 coins per point can be obtained by transferring the reward to Chase airline and hotel partner.

Give it back to yourself

If you want to use points from Sapphire Preferred at a fixed value for purposes other than travel, consider Chase’s Pay Yourself Option. Cardholders can use points worth 1.25 cents per point to pay for donations to select charities (through December 31, 2023) or 1 cent per point value to purchase gas stations and grocery stores (until March 31, 2023).

Which card competes with the Chase Sapphire Preferred?

There are plenty of mid-range travel credit cards that are worth it, but Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is a watch that goes head-to-head with the Sapphire Preferred. The card currently offers the following:
