Tiger Woods pledges to win the historic 2022 British Open championship in St. Andrews but won’t play full schedule ‘again’
After the worst 78-78 finish of his career at the 2022 Masters, Tiger Woods on Sunday answered the question everyone in the golf world wants to know about the sport’s biggest name: Will it? Did he play the historic 150th Open when it returned to St. Andrews famous in July?
Woods jumped at the opportunity to answer that question, pledging to at least one more major tournament this year by admitting that he entered The Open as a venue he would absolutely play. before 2022 closes. However, Tiger has remained tight-lipped about the rest of his schedule – which includes the PGA Championship in Southern Hills in May and the US Open in June – before adding that he will do his best to Participate in as many events as possible.
“I won’t play on a full schedule anymore” Woods told Sky Sports. “It’s just going to be big events. I don’t know if I’ll play [the PGA Championship] in the Southern Hills or not. But I’m looking forward to St. Andrews. It is something very close and dear to my heart.
“I won two Inaugural Championships there. It’s the home of golf. It’s my favorite golf course in the world. So I’ll be there for that game. Anything in Between that, I don’t know, I’ll try. There’s no doubt – I’ll try to get ready for the Southern Hills, and we’ll see what this body can do.”
This clearly raises the question of whether Woods will play in the PGA Championship scheduled for May 19; Tiger won at the Southern Hills in 2007. Not to mention the US Open on June 16, of course. Woods won a total of seven of his 15 major championships in those two events.
Whether Tiger competes between now and The Open in July will ultimately depend on what his body allows him to do. He’s fought his way through four grueling rounds at Augusta National this week – his first on the PGA Tour in more than 500 days – and did well to drop the weekend due to the amount of money that the club has made. He may have suffered over the past few years. Injuries and illness caused by a car crash in February 2021 left his leg severely injured.
By the end of Masters Sunday, he was clearly injured on foot and he had spent most of the last few days on the fairway while using one of his 14 clubs as a club.
“I don’t feel as good as I would like,” Woods said Friday, adding earlier in the week that pain and soreness is something in the future he will always have to deal with.
“I can swing a golf club. Walking is not easy and very difficult,” he said. “As I said with all the hard work, my feet, it’s going to be hard for the rest of my life. It’s just the way it is, but I can do it.”
