The hired Toyota Supra once set a teacher’s land speed record, the teacher was later exposed by social networks

In a classic case of a teacher who goes above and beyond for his students, a teacher from Naperville North High School and his team were recently caught borrowing a car. sports through the Turo app to compete in a land speed record race in Beeville, Texas.

The all-female student group was initially building a truck for the race, but it failed to work on the way to the competition. Fox32 News reported that this prompted their teacher Gregory Ditch to rent a 2021 car Toyota Supra GR 3.0 via peer-to-peer car sharing platform Turo by Geovanni Morales, a San Antonio native.

Ditch is said to have rented the car for about three days, during which time it was driven in the race at up to 260 km/h (160 mph). Morales realized something was wrong when the car was returned and discovered that the car had been raced, causing about $4,000 worth of damage, mainly because all four tires needed replacing.

Despite renting a car from Morales via Turo, Ditch initially refused to rent a car through the platform when asked by Fox 32’s Natalie Bomke. Unfortunately for the teacher, the photos posted on social media not only show a car matching the one rented from Turo, the registration plate number is also identical.

When Fox 32’s Natalie Bomke asked Ditch, “Just to be clear, you didn’t rent it from Turo, did you?” Ditch replied, “No, no, no.”

“I borrowed the car from there, but we ended up getting the car from there, it wasn’t Toyota, so I started calling and getting it from a dealer,” Ditch said.

Turo sent Morales a letter following the third-party investigation stating, “We certainly have enough evidence to show that they violated our prohibited uses and racing. We will be monitoring them for further action.”

“We borrowed it, it’s legal, so I don’t know who he is or what the whole story is about him, but that’s absolutely not what happened,” Ditch said.

Morales told Fox 32 “I’ve been doing rentals for a while,” he said.

“Usually I worry when it’s a younger guy. He’s a lot older, he knows about cars, he’s a teacher, so I think my car is in good condition.”

Morales says he has a feeling the car is being raced, but he trusts Ditch because he’s a teacher and knows about cars. Turo, the peer-to-peer car sharing platform, has confirmed that the car has been rented through their app. Morales said he would never have rented the car if he had known it would be used for racing.

The case highlights the need for responsible use of car-sharing platforms and the importance of transparency when renting a car. As the investigation continues, Ditch may face disciplinary action for his actions.
