Role-based messaging is increasingly popular in Victoria

Catholic-run Mercy Health is piloting a role-based messaging platform at two of its hospitals in Victoria.

In a statement, the healthcare provider said it will launch Baret, a mobile app on Microsoft Teams developed by FiveP. Messaging solution allows structured, closed-loop communication between themthe tunnel staff.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Dr. Oliver Daly, director of medical services at Werribee Mercy Hospital, one of Mercy Health’s hospitals, said they chose Baret because of its role-based messaging functionality, which “embedded tasks as a role, not as a person”.

Its “simplicity” was another deciding factor, he said. “Medical professionals don’t want communication tools to get in the way of their work. When you give them too many choices, it gets in the way.”

“By leveraging Teams, Baret lets you find the person you need to call based on their role right in the app. That means you don’t have to have someone’s phone number.” This is Maybe because the app consolidates information about each employee and their role into one comprehensive database.

Dr. Daly noted how Baret also “kept the number of choices for the types of clinical communication tasks in the app to a minimum.”

Other features that appealed to Mercy Health included clinical imaging functionality, the ability to integrate with rosters, including a direct rostering system, and identity management.

The health care organization is currently reviewing it integrating Baret into its clinical workflow.

THE TREND IS GREATER

Mercy Health was also attracted to Baret as a solution was originally developed for Austin Health, another hospital based in Victoria. During the recent COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare providers needed a solution to streamline communication between staff rotating within the same clinical role within a day. The app is currently used by approximately 6,000 users and 165 clinical teams across 24/7 care facilities at Austin Health.

Another major healthcare service in Victoria, Monash Health has adopted Baret at five of its hospitals.

Baret is now an independent business of FiveP recently divested its Microsoft Business Applications business to financial consulting firm Findex. The sale comes as the company plans to enter the Asia-Pacific and US markets this year.

ON PROFILE

“Hospitals are the most complex organizations on the planet. There are so many different teams doing so many different things in so many different environments. Team members have to pass on important information to each other. That is when role-based communication appears, tasks are associated with roles, not people,” Dr. Daly shared.

“It’s almost simplified and mindless. With Baret, everything just works and you don’t have to think about it. That’s where we want to go with our clinical communications. “
