2022 Honda Civic e: Details of the HEV hybrid hatch, coming this year


The Honda Civic hybrid is coming back.

Honda Europe has introduced details about its new 11th generation e:HEV version civicthat’s because here in third quarter of 2022.

It combines a direct-injection 2.0-liter Atkinson four-cylinder engine with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery, for a total system output of 135kW power and 315Nm of torque.

The powertrain is combined with a fixed gearbox.

Honda says it is targeting fuel consumption below 5.0L/100km and CO2 emissions below 110g/km in the WLTP test.

Civic e:HEV power output is 23kW for the larger model Fit hybrid, albeit with an identical torque figure.

It also increases by 39kW and 62Nm on the new version HR-V e: HEVand up 4kW and 75Nm on the turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder in the Civic VTi-LX.

In the ADR test, the gasoline-powered Civic consumed 6.3L/100km.

The most obvious rival of Civic e: HEV is a popular car Toyota Corolla hybriduse from 3.5 to 4.2 liters per 100km.

The Civic e:HEV uses a new Power Controller located under the bonnet, while the Smart Power Unit sits under the rear seats.

There are four driving modes to choose from: Eco, Normal, Sport and Individual. Individual mode allows the driver to individually select engine, transmission and instrument cluster display settings.

Honda says it’s focused on noise control and drivability, promising a “smooth cabin environment” and a “smooth, linear feel under acceleration”.

Exterior changes are limited to a revised rear bumper with concealed exhaust outlets, as well as blue accents on the Honda badging.

More notable are the major interior changes, with the usual gearshift lever being replaced by a push of a button. There’s also a current display on the central 9.0-inch touchscreen, as well as hybrid system information in the instrument cluster.

Honda Australia boss Stephen Collins has previously said the brand is aiming for the same price gap as Toyota between petrol and hybrid, meaning the e:HEV will likely cost just under $50,000 when it drops prices in Australia.

That suggests the Civic e:HEV can be offered with the same level of specs as the petrol model. The redesigned Civic hatchback is now exclusively offered here with the top-spec VTi-LX trim.

The brand predicts about 900 annual sales for the gasoline-only Civic, but said it remains unclear how close demand for hybrids will be to match that.

Both variants will sit below the upcoming Type R, which has yet to be officially announced but has been widely watched and teased.

Honda is expected to offer an improvement of the current turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the bonnet. In the upcoming Type R version, it produces 228kW of power and 400Nm of torque.

Honda previously offered hybrid variants of the seventh, eighth and ninth generation Civic sedans.

The Civic Hybrid was built locally as part of the Honda hybrid range almost 10 years ago, with the hybrid type JazzThe Insight and CR-Z also disappeared at that point.

More recently, Honda Australia said it would offer a hybrid version of each new model.

The Civic e:HEV will follow shortly after the HR-V e:HEV, the first electric HR-V to be offered in Australia. It is due in the second quarter of this year.

They will join the Accord hybrid, although hybrid CR-VAT remains out of bounds for Australia.
