Beholder, daughter of Henny Hughes out of the blue mare Leslie’s Lady , are half-sisters to the 1st class winners and stallions Into Mischief and Mendelssohn . She has budgeted over $6 million during her five-year career with Mandella, who has seen her in all of her victories. The notable California heiress caught 11 1st graders and set an 18-6-0 record in 26 starts, also for Spendthrift Farm owner.
Beholder’s other ponies include a 2-year-old by Curlin named Karin with a me; Teena Ella, a child full of desire by War front , and in a dirty way by Bolt d’Oro born earlier this year. It was bred back to Curlin in 2022.
“I had him a little bit and he had some little problems,” Mandella told Santa Anita in public QB One. “So he has been sent and returned, but he is doing well.
“He trains well and I think racing will make him better but I don’t know that his mind is really on it. We’ll start a race with him and I hope that. he’ll probably settle back in and finish well, giving him a head start for better things.”
Beholder finished fourth in his debut before becoming the first horse since 1976 to win a 1st place race at ages 2, 3, 4 and 5, and one of only two horses to ever win. won three Breeders’ Cup races.
When asked about the similarities between QB One and her famous mother, Mandella replied with a typical quote.
“He has an appetite,” he said.
