Keeneland September Sales Notebook – BloodHorse
New-to-the-Scene Stewart Picks Up Seven on Day 1
Buyer John Stewart and agent Gavin O’Connor are making a splash at the Keeneland September Yearling Sale. During the first session, the pair picked up seven yearlings, the priciest a $1 million son of leading sire Into Mischief . Consigned as Hip 147 by Eaton Sales, the colt is a full sibling to three-time grade 1 winner Practical Joke out of Halo Humor .
The third-highest price tag came as Hip 83, an $800,000 colt by Into Mischief from the Clearsky Farm banner. The colt is out of Tempted Stakes (G3) winner Daisy and is a half sibling to Botanical , a dual stakes winner this year for Brad Cox.
“He is an amazing representative of the stallion,” agent Gavin O’Connor said about Hip 83. “The one word I wrote on the page was ‘wow!’ I have seen so many Into Mischiefs. That price indicates the wow I was feeling at the time. He has a stallion pedigree and is a great big physical.”
Other purchases include a $350,000 Uncle Mo filly, consigned as Hip 45 by KatieRich Farms; a $650,000 Curlin colt out of Byrama from the Taylor Made Sales Agency draft; Hip 129, an American Pharoah filly from Hill ‘n’ Dale at Xalapa for $350,000; a Constitution colt, consigned as Hip 135 by Hill ‘n’ Dal at Xalapa, for $850,000; and a $350,000 colt by Omaha Beach from Mill Ridge Sales.
Stewart spent a gross of $4,350,000, at an average of $621,429, with no sign of slowing for Day 2.
Scharbauer Stocks Up
Texan Douglas Scharbauer of Valor Farm picked up three yearlings during the first session, headlined by a $900,000 Uncle Mo filly consigned by Denali Stud, agent for Stonestreet Bred & Raised as Hip 189. The filly is out of Lady Pauline , a Munnings half sister to King’s Stand Stakes (G1) winner and champion Lady Aurelia , both daughters of grade 2 winner D’Wildcat Speed.

“I like her a lot; she’s a good-looking Uncle Mo,” Scharbauer said. “We looked at several horses today, but she stood out to us. The Into Mischief I bought at the beginning (Hip 7) and the Justify filly (Hip 133) are all standouts. I wish my parents were still alive; they would be here. We are planning on staying for the sale; I have three that I am selling as well.”
The Into Mischief colt, consigned by Hinkle Farms, and the Justify filly from Four Star Sales both sold for $700,000.
