The best credit cards for Amazon purchases – The Points Guy

Editor’s Note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

With millions of products at your fingertips, it’s no surprise that people spend so much at Amazon. Whether you’re an occasional Amazon shopper or at a time when the online retail giant’s “Recommended For You” section knows you better than your best friend, you’ll want to make sure that you’re using a card that maximizes your purchases from the site.

However, determining Which card is right for you for Amazon purchases requires looking beyond points earning rates and considering other factors, such as bonuses, purchase protection, and extended warranties. In some cases, you may even want to consider different cards depending on the specific purchase. Also, your best option may vary depending on whether or not you’re a Prime member and what other cards you’ve brought with you.

Finally, even if you don’t actually use the participating card, you can still get up to 50% off your purchase by just signing up 1 American Express point or 1 chase point for your purchase.

With all that in mind, here’s a look at the best credit cards to use when shopping at Amazon.

Best credit cards for Amazon purchases

Information about the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature, Discover it Cash Back card, and Chase Freedom has been independently obtained by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

WEAKNESS

At first glance, Amazon’s own Prime Reward Visa seems to be the most interesting option — and for most people, it probably is. The card is exclusive to Prime members, not to be confused with the basic Amazon Rewards Visa, no charge an annual fee (although you obviously need to pay for the Prime membership).

It offers an impressive 5% cashback on all purchases on Amazon and Whole Foods; 2% cashback at restaurants, gas stations and pharmacies; and 1% cashback on all other purchases.

The biggest drawback is the high return on spend which is all this card really offers. While it comes with purchase protection (insurance for up to $500 worth of items if they are damaged or stolen within 120 days of purchase) and extended warrantyit does not include important purchase benefits such as price protection And back protectionso it’s not ideal for big purchase.

The other limitation is that you need a Prime membership ($139 per year) to qualify. While there are plenty of U.S. households already signed up for Prime, that’s probably not a big deal for the card’s target demographic.

Discover it Cashback

Amazon’s Prime Rewards card isn’t the only card that gives 5% cash back on purchases – free every year Discover it Cashback same (on rotating categories, up to $1,500 per quarter you activate and 1% cash back afterwards) — and this doesn’t require you to be a Prime member. However, this monetization rate is usually only available on Amazon purchases only a quarter of the year, and even that is not guaranteed to appear every year.

The last time Amazon was in the rotating category was in the fourth quarter of 2021 and 2022.

Keep in mind that while this card is great for Amazon purchases in any quarter when Amazon is among the retailers that count toward the bonus, it’s not the best card to use year-round. When Amazon is not part of the quarterly cashback bonus category, your purchase will only receive 1%.

What makes the card stand out, however, is that Discover will match your rewards at the end of your first five card memberships, so you can get up to 10% back on Amazon.com purchases from one quarter then it is the bonus retailer.

Unfortunately, the card has stop other benefitsincludes extended product warranties, return guarantees, purchase protection, and price protection.

bottom line

As you can see, choosing a card for Amazon purchases isn’t as simple as choosing the card at the top of this list.

The best credit card rewards for you depends on your personal habits and priorities. So, while the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature card offers great returns on Amazon purchases, it’s not everyone’s best choice, as it’s only available to Prime members and lacks other options. important shopping protections, for which you’ll want to make a larger purchase.

Card benefits like back protection proved very precious and it might be worth sacrificing 2%-3% rewards in the long run. Also, if you have saved Points are transferable for a particular redemption, it might make sense to earn rewards in that currency instead of cashback so you can top up your account and book that prize trip you dreamed about earlier.
