The Australian test helped form Mahindra Scorpio

Mahindra few days left until release Scorpio four-wheel drive into Australia, but the car has spent a lot of time on local roads already.

Over the past six months, Mahindra has been quietly testing three of its upcoming all-wheel drive SUVs with a range of 120,000 kilometers over Australia’s rough terrain.

Testing begins in October 2022 with the goal of ensuring the vehicle can withstand extreme conditions across Australia and broadly the rest of the world.

Mahindra tested the vehicle’s towing ability in 45-degree heat, driving continuously for 18 hours a day, and over 10,000 kilometers of dirt only to test its durability in the Outback.

Nationwide testing included extreme heat, rough terrain, steep inclines, and “cramps”.

Mahindra will announce the Scorpio specs and pricing in Australia next week, although government filings suggest Mahindra is likely to bring up to five variants Down Under.

All vehicles come with a 2.2 liter turbocharged diesel engine four-cylinder and six-seater engines.

Three potential options will have rear-wheel drive and two will have all-wheel drive.

The turbo-diesel engine generates 129kW power and 400Nm torque, and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

At 4662mm long, 1917mm wide and 1857mm tall on a 2750mm wheelbase, the SUV is about the same size as a mid-size SUV like Subaru Forester.

Beneath the skin, however, it rides on a sturdy ladder-like chassis like a larger vehicle Mitsubishi Pajero Sports or Ford Everest. It is the spiritual successor of the Suzuki Grand Vitara and has no direct rival in Australia since the GWM Tank 300 is currently only a hybrid version.

Mahindra sells the Scorpio with the Scorpio-N badge in India and has confirmed over 100,000 orders since the car was revealed in mid-2022.
