Tesla New post its second-quarter vehicle production and deliveries for 2022. Here are the key numbers:
- Total deliveries Q2 2022: 254,695
- Total output in the second quarter of 2022: 258,580
Delivery numbers, the closest approximation to sales reported by Tesla, fell short of analyst expectations.
According to a consensus compiled by the FactSet-owned Street Account, analysts had expected deliveries of 256,520 vehicles during the quarter, which was marked by Covid restrictions, supply chain failures, lack of semiconductor chips and other parts.
Last year, Tesla delivered 201,250 vehicles in Q2, reaching more than 200,000 units for the first time in 3 months. During the first quarter of 2022, Tesla delivered 310,048 vehicles.
Today’s delivery numbers represent a sales growth of 26.5% year over year and a consecutive 17.9% decline for Elon Musk’s electric vehicle project.
The company has oriented for an average annual growth of about 50%, in the long term, depending on production capacity and other factors.
During Tesla’s first-quarter shareholder meeting, the company said, “We plan to grow our production capacity as quickly as possible. Over a multi-year period, we expect to see gains in growth. average annual growth of 50% in vehicle deliveries”.
In China this quarter, Tesla had to close or only partially allow operations at its Shanghai factory for weeks due to covid-related public health orders. (FactSet noted that the predictions of some analysts were dropped from the StreetAccount consensus if they did not take into account the closure of the Shanghai factory.)
Other supply chain failures, made worse by Russia’s Brutal Invasion of Ukrainealso impacted Tesla and the broader auto industry during the quarter.
Additionally, Tesla is struggling with the high costs of building and starting production at new factories in Austin, Texas and near Berlin, along with plants in Fremont, California and Shanghai. CEO Elon Musk has publicly lamented that new factories are… Tesla costs billions of dollarsbut have not yet been able to produce enough vehicles and batteries to match their costs.
As startups and legacy automakers offer more new electric vehicles, Tesla share of the global and domestic electric vehicle market expected to decrease but still significantly.
