Tesla employees caught remotely sharing images of naked men and others from a customer’s car camera

A group of Tesla employees have been caught sharing private photos and videos from customers’ internal and external cameras in a egregious privacy breach, according to a report. Reuters.

New Tesla vehicles are equipped with a number of external and internal cameras that are used to record security incidents to an internal memory card, and are also used as a dash cam.

These cameras are also used for the car’s Autopilot system.

According to Reuters, between 2019 and 2022, a group of Tesla employees downloaded and shared photos and videos from customers’ cars without the customers’ knowledge.

Some of the downloaded images and shared videos include a naked man walking up to their car, others include crashes and road incidents that customers don’t allow to be shared.

In 2021, video of an accident was shared, showing a Tesla car traveling at an alarming speed in a residential area. The footage, narrated by a former employee, illustrates the tragic moment when the car collided with a young cyclist.

As a result of the impact, the child was thrown sharply in one direction, while the bicycle was thrown in the other direction. The disturbing video went viral throughout Tesla’s office in San Mateo, California. According to the former employee, it spread “like wildfire” through private conversations.

Seven employees told Reuters that a program the company uses can determine GPS coordinates from footage, helping to determine where customers live based on video data.

Tesla’s own privacy policy states, “camera recordings remain anonymous and are not linked to you or your vehicle.”

Reuters contacted more than 300 Tesla employees about its story, and more than a dozen agreed to be interviewed anonymously as part of the story.
