Strong winds, unseasonably low temperatures and some snow: Here's your Thanksgiving week forecast

Starting Sunday, some states will face dangerous snow, ice and winds. And a secondary system would bring additional hassles for midweek commutes.

Traveling by plane for vacation? You may experience travel difficulties as well as delays.

Here is the breakdown for each day.

Sunday

From the Great Lakes down to the Gulf Coast, rain will be the main threat, although occasional sleet will occur in areas of the upper Midwest.

The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) said: “A strong cold front brings a wave of significantly colder temperatures across the Midwest and Great Lakes late Sunday through Monday, triggering a sleet effect. over the lake to disrupt the Great Lakes high winds on Monday,” the Weather Center (WPC) say saturday. “In front of the storm system’s cold front, more showers are forecast to break out from the Deep South to the North Mid-Atlantic on Sunday afternoon. These showers are forecast to reach the Northeast and drag on long south until Sunday night southeast.”

All of that rain in Detroit, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Atlanta, Memphis and Pittsburgh could lead to some airport delays as well as interstate and highway congestion.

Overall, cumulative rainfall is expected to be about 1 inch or less, but some isolated spots could be up to 2 inches.

“Additionally, prolonged showers and thunderstorms are forecast across South Florida on Sunday,” the WPC said.

On Sunday, strong winds began to pick up in the Northern Plains, shifting into the Midwest on Monday. This can lead to significant delays for airlines as well as very bumpy flights in some locations.

Monday

On Monday, the cold front will stretch from Maine to Florida, with rain and wind the main threats.

Cleveland, Syracuse and Buffalo, New York, forecast snow with strong winds.

“The rain will turn to rain and sleet on Monday after a strong cold spell,” the National Weather Service office in Buffalo said. Monday also marks another day of major temperature swings across the country.

Temperatures in much of the Midwest and Ohio River Valley will stay below normal. Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Detroit, Nashville, Tennessee and St. Louis will experience temperatures 10 to 15 degrees above the seasonal average.

Above-average temperatures will be confined to the area from Denver to the Canadian border, where highs will be 15 to 20 degrees higher than normal.

Tuesday

Through Tuesday, prolonged sleet will remain east of the Great Lakes, as a new low-pressure system pushes west of the Mountains. This storm will become the focus of travel troubles in the Midwest on Wednesday.

Thanks to the system from the previous day, the Northeast will continue to deal with rain, snow and gusty winds that can clutter roads and runways.

Keep in mind that there is still enough uncertainty in the evolution of this system to generate other types of precipitation. If the temperature were just a few degrees warmer, it would mean the difference between snow and rain in some states.

Mother Nature can also make her holidays confusing due to drastic temperature changes.

From Boston down to Jacksonville, Tuesday’s temperatures will be 10 to 15 degrees Celsius lower than usual, making it more like Christmas than Thanksgiving.

The Intermountain West and High Plains will have the opposite effect. From Amarillo, Texas, to Bismarck, North Dakota, temperatures will be 15 to 30 degrees higher than a normal Tuesday, more like Halloween than Thanksgiving.

As the system next begins to enter the Pacific Northwest, Seattle and Portland, Oregon, will likely experience 1 or 2 inches of rain.

Wednesday

Wednesday provided a bit of respite for the Southeast, but windy conditions became the focal point for a large swath of land, from Michigan to Texas.

Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas and Oklahoma City are likely to deal with gusts of 20 to 30 mph throughout the day.

The high school system will move to the Midwest late Wednesday. Rain, snow and even ice are possible in Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois, which can be very dangerous for both road and air.

Eventually, a new system will begin to make its way into Mountain West. There is a chance of sleet in Denver and Salt Lake City.

“Across the northern floor, a combination of low temperatures and winds will produce cold winds,” the WPC said.

Thanksgiving can be more like Christmas

A cold front will bring showers from Texas to Ohio, along with some sleet for Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Temperatures mostly recovered back to normal on Thursday for much of the eastern half of the US, but keep in mind that “normal” can still be cold.

New York is likely to experience low temperatures in the 40s, so for anyone who might be venturing out to see the big parade in the morning, be sure to get ready!

How about the homeland? While it’s too far to handle the forecast for the weekend after Thanksgiving, two regions look to have more potential than others: the Pacific Northwest and the Gulf Coast region.
