Whether it’s babysitting or flipping burgers, most people’s first job can’t compare to what Paris Muhammad is doing. At just 10 years old, she was the CEO of her own makeup company called Paris Place LLC.
The 5th grader from Georgia made history as the youngest ever member of the Conyers-Rockdale Chamber of Commerce in Georgia last month.
“I started a business when I was seven years old,” says Muhammad. “Me and nana, we started selling air fresheners and body oils. And a year ago we added lip gloss to our collection.”
Her mother, Tenisha Odom, said she knew early on that her daughter had a passion for cosmetics.
“I would see little patches of makeup on her face, and I’d be like ‘Are you wearing lipstick or my makeup?’,” Odom said. “And you know, she’ll give me a side eye, just so I know she’s up to something.”
Her makeup has been sold in beauty supply stores in three states – Arkansas, Georgia and Virginia – and can be shipped around the country. Muhammad says her products are for everyone.
“My lip gloss isn’t sticky or too shiny. My lip gloss is also vegan and gluten-free,” says Muhammad.
Muhammad said her business has been really successful this year. She has her own billboard in Atlanta, holds a ribbon-cutting ceremony, and even meets celebrities. Her mother said the sky was the limit for her daughter.
“I knew she was going to be something because she always said she never wanted to work for anyone,” Odom said. “We would talk about entrepreneurship over the years. We didn’t know she was really listening.”
Muhammad hopes to one day have her own store, but for now, she will continue to grow her business while following her mother’s unique rule: no CEO work in the evenings at school.
