Stellantis targets market center with new electric vehicle platform


Stellantis announced more details on the new architecture that will underpin a range of small and medium-sized electric vehicles, offering a range of up to 700 km.

The company said Average STLA The platform, first announced on Electric Vehicle Day 2021 and billed as a “BEV by design,” will support electric passenger cars, crossovers and SUVs with front- or all-wheel drive.

Stellantis promises vehicles on the platform can provide more than 220 mm of ground clearance “to ensure off-road capability and performance”.

STLA Medium will launch on a new medium this year – expected to be the next generation peugeot 3008 — and Stellantis says it can build up to two million vehicles on it at several factories around the world.

The platform will support vehicles ranging in length from 4.3 to 4.9 meters, with a wheelbase likely to range from 2700 to 2900 mm.

Stellantis specifically says that the STLA Medium will be used by C and D segment vehicles, of which it currently offers 26 vehicle nameplates across various platforms. These include Citroen C4, jeep compass, Alfa Romeo Stelvio And peugeot 508.

It’s a significant portion of the global car market. Stellantis says C- (small) and D- (midsize) vehicles account for 35 million of the 78.5 million global sales in 2022.

The company is promising best-in-class range, charge time, performance, efficiency, affordability and driving pleasure.

It promises a WLTP range of more than 700km with the ‘Performance’ battery pack and over 500km with the ‘Standard’ package, with up to 98kWh of useful energy.

The STLA Medium vehicle will use a 400V electrical architecture. Depending on the application, Stellantis promises an energy consumption of less than 14kWh per 100km and the ability to charge the vehicle from 20 to 80% in 27 minutes – a rate of 2.4kWh per minute.

They will also offer single- or dual-motor powertrains with capacities ranging from 160 to 285 kW.

The battery packs will be modular and have a single layer to maximize internal space.

While Stellantis has not specified the exact battery chemistries it will deliver, the STLA Medium platform has been designed with provisions for future impurities such as solid-state batteries and free of nickel and cobalt.

Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said: “What we see today is the product of more than two years of uncompromising innovation to deliver clean, safe and affordable mobility, guaranteed supported by our €30 billion investment in electrification and software through 2025.”

STLA Medium is one of four global EV platforms that Stellantis introduced on Electric Vehicle Day 2021, the others being the STLA Small and STLA Large (naturally) and the STLA Frame for large-bodied vehicles.

All are designed to be futuristic, flexible in terms of wheelbase, width, overhangs, ride height and suspension design. They are also designed to incorporate the STLA Brain architecture and the STLA SmartCockpit and STLA AutoDrive technology platforms.

By 2030, Stellantis is aiming to make up 100% of passenger car sales in Europe and 50% of passenger car and light truck sales in the US.
