Son of Thunder Carries on Laoban’s Legacy

Climax Stallions introduced Oct. 28 it’s standing Son of Thunder, a full brother to the late Laoban  , at Waldorf Farm New York in 2022. He will stand for $2,500.

“We are honored to have been able to purchase a full brother to such an incredible stallion whose life was cut much too short,” said Sean Feld, president of Climax Stallions. “We will honor Laoban’s legacy by offering a complementary breeding to anyone who bred, bought, or is racing any progeny of Laoban.”

Laoban, who sired grade 1 winner Simply Ravishing in his first crop, entered stud in New York and then was moved to WinStar Farm in Kentucky. He died suddenly at the age of 8 in May.

Lael Stable bought Son of Thunder for $475,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s 2019 The Saratoga Sale, its select yearling sale in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The colt by Uncle Mo   out of the stakes-placed Speightstown   mare, Chattertown, placed once in three starts but impressed with his stretch, athleticism, and conformation.

“He easily passes the eye test. If he duplicates what his brother did with his foals, you can breed any type of mare to him,” said Waldorf farm manager Kenny Toye.

“He is by Uncle Mo, who’s changing into a legendary sire of sires,” added Waldorf Farm proprietor Dr. Jerry Bilinski. “We’re flattered so as to add Son of Thunder to our stallion barn.”
