News is emerging that Socorro Vortex The luxury liveaboard ran aground in the vicinity of Socorro Island in the Revillagigedo Islands. One Associated Press storypublished in Spanish on Monday, May 9, broke the news, then appeared on ScubaBoard.com.
According to the AP, the Mexican Navy reportedly rescued 25 people – “including Americans, British, Belgians, Irish, Italians and Mexicans – near an island in the Pacific Ocean after the cruise ship that They’re going aground.” The Mexican Navy named the Socorro Vortex as the ship mentioned.
The article said the crew had radioed for help and that the Navy had left to the scene of the incident. A life raft was discovered near Socorro Island carrying 14 passengers on a liveaboard (seven Americans, two Britons, three Belgians, one Irish and one New Zealander) and 11 crew members (eight Mexicans) , one British and two Italian). The Navy statement noted that there were some injuries, but they were not serious. The passengers and crew were taken to Isla Socorro Naval Area for medical evaluation and then transferred to San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur.
