Justin Nelson, the election technology company’s lead counsel, said the Dominion Voting System had two goals in the Fox News defamation case – accountability and “trying to make Dominion whole.”

He told CNN on Tuesday that both are done on the deal.

Fox News’ payment of more than $787 million to Dominion and the network’s statement admitting that its coverage of the 2020 election was false is “a powerful message of accountability,” and was an important win for the employees of his client’s company.

“This is really the first time someone has paid for lying about the 2020 election and we are very proud of that,” he said.

While the settlement doesn’t stipulate that Fox’s hosts must admit to the lies on the air, Nelson said it’s the inevitable outcome for the network.

Texts and emails that emerged during the litigation from within the Fox network, he said, are valuable. “And what today has shown is that you pay the price if you lie.”

Previous court filings have revealed messages showing the most prominent stars and top-level executives at Fox News. private mocking statement about election fraud during the 2020 election, even though the right-wing channel allows lies about the presidential campaign to be advertised on the air.

“There’s a lot of things we teach our kids, it’s the truth that really matters, and if you lie, there are consequences to that in the end,” Nelson said.

He said the deal with Fox sends a “strong message” to other right-wing agencies with which Dominion has a legal dispute.
