Seattle Mariners’ Julio Rodríguez Named Rookie of the Year
Seattle central defender Julio Rodríguez was voted the American League’s Rookie of the Year on Monday after hitting 0.284 with 28 home players, 75 RBIs and 25 bases stolen to help the Mariners reach post-season for the first time in years. 2001.
The 21-year-old received 29 out of 30 votes in first place and a second with 148 points from the Baseball Writers Association of America board.

Rodríguez, the only rookie at this year’s All-Star Game, became the fifth Seattle player to win the honor after first pitcher Alvin Davis in 1984, right-hander Kazuhiro Sasaki in 2000, right puncher Ichiro Suzuki in 2001 (when he was also voted MVP) and center puncher Kyle Lewis in 2020.
Rodríguez and the Mariners agreed in August to a $209.3 million, 12-year deal starting next season, worth $469.6 million over 17 years if he wins two MVP awards .
