Sea Ice Mysteries – Watts Up With That?

Guest posts by Willis Eschenbach

I have never seen ice in the North Pole or the South Pole. However, I have fished herring eggs commercially in the Bering Sea, placing seine nets in the “ice” off Nome, Alaska. Crushed rock is the remains of the pack rock. It looks like this:

As a result, polar ice has long been a concern of mine. So let me invite you to take a walk with me through the current state of the Arctic and Antarctic ice sheets. First, here are the changes in Arctic sea ice:

Figure 1. Unusual changes in Arctic sea ice cover during the satellite era. Values are anomalies from the thirty-year average 1991-2020

Since about 1990, people have been talking about how anthropogenic CO2 is reducing the amount of sea ice in the Arctic. When it began to decline very rapidly around 2015, it was suggested that we had passed the “tipping point” from which the Arctic ice would never recover. And all this time, there have been many predictions of an “ice-free arctic ocean”.

But then… around 2018, the Arctic sea ice increased again.

Why did it suddenly start to decline so quickly after 2015?

Nobody know. Not a single scientist on this planet can tell you.

Why did the turnaround and rapid recovery start in 2018?

Nobody know. Not a single scientist on this planet can tell you.

Having seen those mysteries, what about the sea ice in Antarctica? Here is that data:

Figure 2. Changes in Antarctic sea ice anomalies during the satellite epoch. Values are anomalies from the thirty-year average 1991-2020

More mysteries. Why did the Antarctic ice sheet, unlike the Arctic ice mass, start to increase quite rapidly around 2008?

Nobody know.

Why does it differ from the North Pole by staying the same from 2010 to 2015?

Nobody know.

And why then does it mirror the North Pole by falling very quickly from ~2015 to ~2018, and then, like the North Pole, turn around and start to recover?

Nobody know.

Ultimately, this is the global situation.

Figure 3. Changes in global sea ice anomalies in the satellite era. Values are anomalies from the thirty-year average 1991-2020

It remained essentially unchanged from 1981 to 2008, increased until 2010, remained the same until 2015, decreased until 2018, and then recovered almost completely back to the average of the years. 1990-2000.

And no climate scientist on our dark planet can tell you why…except for a few certainties.

First, aside from being unable to explain recent fundamental changes in sea ice in retrospect, there is not a single climate scientist on the planet who would have predicted such large changes in sea ice.

Second, it is highly unlikely that the cause of the recent movements is CO2.

Figure 4. The increase of CO2 in the atmosphere.

As you can see, the rise in CO2 in the atmosphere is steady, strong, and unchanging… but the ice covers it up and down like a drunken yo-yo.

This is the weirdest part. Despite the failure of many predictions of an “ice-free Arctic”, despite false claims that we have passed the “tipping point”, despite the fact that it is impossible to find a cause to the strange and unexpected changes in the polar sea ice. can be explained by anyone and the changes are not predicted by anyone… climate scientists STILL stress that they can tell us what global temperatures will be like in 2100.

You are free to believe in those failed mass destroyers if you want.

I… overcame difficulties. I’ve seen too many of their predictions fall apart and fail.

Sincerely to everyone,

w.

My boring song: As always, I ask that when you comment, you quote the exact words you are referring to. I can defend my words—I choose them very carefully for that exact reason. But I cannot defend your (wrong) misunderstanding of my words. Thank.
