The composite clouds of gas and dust glow in this Hubble image of the Herbig-Haro object known as HH 45. The Herbig-Haro object is a rare type of nebula that occurs when hot gas is emitted by a star. nascent ejects collision with the gas and dust around it at hundreds of miles per second, creating a bright shock wave. In this image, blue indicates ionized oxygen (O II) and purple shows ionized magnesium (Mg II). The researchers are particularly interested in these elements because they can be used to identify shocks and ionization fronts.

This object is located in the nebula NGC 1977, itself part of a three-nebula complex known as the Running Man. NGC 1977 – like its companions NGC 1975 and NGC 1973 – is a reflective nebula, which means it does not emit its own light but reflects light from nearby stars, like a lamp. fog lighting road.

Hubble has been observing the region looking for stellar jets and planet-forming disks around young stars, and to see how their environments influence the evolution of such disks.
