Speaking to ESPN’s Stephen A Smith, lightweight powerhouse Ryan Garcia unequivocally indicated that he feels he’s the one who pushed the upcoming super fight between him and Gervonta Davis into reality. Garcia said: “I had to chase him but in the end we did. “He is running away from me. He did, but like I said, I made it happen. When asked by Smith exactly how Davis avoided him, Garcia gave a rather strange response. “I’ve been asking for this fight since I was 17, 18,” he said. “I guess he always wanted to take the easier route.” However, Garcia added that “all of that doesn’t matter now.”

So what did Garcia believe led Davis to start the game now? “He realized that he really wanted this fight, too,” Garcia said. “He ended up saying you’re next (after fighting Rollie Romero).” Garcia has made it clear that at this point he is happy that the complicated negotiations, which risked spoiling the game, have come to a successful conclusion. “It was a tough process,” he admits, “but we figured it out and great things are about to happen right now.” Indeed, the announcement of the match last week from both boxers via social networks took the world of the ring by surprise.

Although it has not been signed, all parties have openly stated that the war will be over. The reason why the match – now probably almost over – was such a big deal was because the two undefeated fighters involved were both so good – as well as so popular. Both have the power to knock down a wall, as well as considerable boxing skill to boot. “I think this is probably one of the best fights you’ll see,” Garcia said when Smith asked him to join the upcoming battle, “because if he doesn’t get knocked out soon it’s going to be one hell of a fight.” the battle of speed, (and of) power all the time. Someone may be abandoned. Someone can be knocked down.”

When asked about Davis’ destructive left hand, Garcia showed no concern. He wouldn’t hit me with that fruit, he said. “I will be ready for anything.” Smith then asked the big question – how did Garcia see the fight unfold? “I’m predicting KO,” the Californian said. “I’ll take out Gervonta Davis.” Of course, Davis himself might have something to say about that, too. After all, he’s known for being quite effective at turning off the lights himself.
