Haney asks Kambosos to fight again, Lomachenko stays in Ukraine
The saga of who George Kambosos Jr may face in his first lightweight title defense may be coming to an end.
Last November, the Australian won the WBA, IBF and WBO belts from Teofimo Lopez in New York to become the most wanted man in the tournament. WBC title winner Devin Haney stayed out of the ring and after the fight there seemed to be a mild verbal agreement that they would fight each other. After months of negotiations, Twitter and a new horse in the American race may have finally landed at Kambosos.
Vasiliy Lomachenko, who decided to stay in Ukraine to help defend his country in the fight against the barbaric Russian invasion, left the door open for Devin Haney. ESPN’s Mike Coppinger reported that an offer was sent on Monday from Kambosos promoter Lou DiBella for the 23-year-old to come to Australia and face the three-belt champion in a lightweight title match. undisputed on June 5.
Lomachenko agreed a deal to face the Kambosos in June but has now withdrawn, which has earned the world respect for the 34-year-old.
“The fight he is going through right now is much bigger than any boxing match. We have nothing but the utmost respect for his decision. We said we were going to try to make the biggest fights, and we did that today (Monday),” DiBella told ESPN.
Despite an offer for Haney, disagreements on social media between him and Kambosos continued. The fingers crossed the stop of the keyboard and the fight began for the undisputed lightweight world championship.
