Rescuer shaves off his ripe coat to reveal the beautiful rescue dog underneath

On the afternoon of October 26, a teacher at a Detroit school contacted Detroit Dog Rescue after seeing a heavily molted dog roaming the vicinity. It was a rainy, overcast day with temperatures as low as 40.

When they saw the poor dog, the volunteers vowed to do whatever they could to get him out of the cold. They captured the following photo of him moments before being rescued.

Detroit Dog Rescue has described the case of the sweet dog they named Professor as one of the worst cases of abandonment they have ever seen. He was immediately taken to the rescue team veterinarian for emergency treatment.

Unfortunately, the Professor’s injuries were so severe that the veterinary staff couldn’t even get to his body for a thorough examination. They decided to give anesthesia to shave off the hair and feces.

There is always a slight risk in anesthetizing an animal without knowing their medical history, but in the Professor’s case, there was simply no other option. They cannot care for him without removing the hair; and they can’t remove all that hair without anesthesia.

The professor’s caregivers could tell he had pneumonia from severe breathing, so they raced against the clock to shave him off as quickly as possible and remove him from the anesthetic. Fortunately, he made it through the procedure well.

After a warm bath, antibiotics for pneumonia, and other medications to make him more comfortable, the Professor has become a whole new dog! He still has a long road to recovery, but one thing is for sure he will never abandoned again or left in the cold!

Thank you to the wonderful volunteers at Detroit Dog Rescue, the veterinary staff caring for the Professor, and everyone who has expressed emotional and financial support for this baby’s recovery. !

Update:

The professor has been adopted, and is being spoiled by his new family! He has been renamed “Coconut”, and his coat has grown into a beautiful and soft coat!

We are so glad he is doing better than ever and will spend the rest of his life in love!
