Rejection case! RED’s lawsuit against Nikon ends
Source: Ghoul
Almost a year since professional camcorder manufacturer Sued Nikon for infringing on their video compression patent, the two companies agreed to dismiss the joint lawsuit “without prejudice”. That means Nikon is allowed to continue offering compressed RAW video recording inside cameras like Z9—achieved big data compression technology firmware update 2.0 in April 2022.
There could be a lot of reasons behind the so-called Layoff Rule 41, and we can only speculate what they might be, but it’s clear that neither party has the guts to proceed with the litigation and all the legal costs that may be incurred. Given Nikon’s objections to the authenticity of RED’s patents, it appears the Japanese company has agreed to pay RED for the rights to use them. On the other hand, if RED felt the patents would not withstand scrutiny, they might have decided not to pursue the case in order to keep the patents on the books and avoid undermining them.
Either way, this is good news for filmmakers—especially those with a more modest budget for a full-frame mirrorless camera like the Z9!
