Ranger Rescued a dog that was too hot, carried it down a rocky trail
Summer is really heating up! A group of hikers recently witnessed how sweltering heat can be harmful to a dog. Thankfully, a strong and caring park ranger came to the rescue, carrying an overheated dog on his shoulder all the way up a mountain trail and saving his life.
A group of friends go hiking until a dog is having a hard time and its human companion
Lexie Daniel and a group of friends hike the trails in the hills in the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. It was a terribly hot day, with temperatures in the 90s. They went to see a man and his dog, who was clearly overheated and struggling.
They happily provided water for the dog, but it was not enough. The dog was very large and the man was extremely worried about his dog not being strong enough to carry it. The trail extends several miles down the hill.
Park services were called to the scene
Everyone in the group became increasingly worried about the dog. He was listless and struggling. Drinking water did not improve his condition. Park Services was called in to help.
It didn’t take long for Ranger Supervisor Kris Salapek to locate them on the Mount Tammany trail. Without hesitation, he lifted the ailing dog over his shoulder and began his descent.
The hike takes about an hour
Supervisory ranger Kris Salapek walked several miles in about an hour with the large, heavy dog slung over his shoulder. Crucially, he took the time it took to get into a bed in the creek to wet the overheated dog.
Salapek put the dog in the water and wet its fur and mouth. This step can make all the difference for the dog. Witnesses reported that the dog had clearly improved by the time the dog and its hero reached the parking lot below.
Medical attention was received and the dog recovered
The dog’s human was ahead of the rescuer. He was able to get in the car, get ready and wait to take his dog to the vet clinic. Lexie was able to see the man afterwards and was delighted to hear that the dog had made a full recovery.
Lexie wrote on Facebook, “This is a HERO. We are so lucky to have rangers like this (who) put the animals before themselves. This ranger deserves crazy recognition and standing ovation for his bravery, selflessness, and strength. “
This story is a stark reminder of How dangerous can hot temperatures be? for our furry friends. Thank goodness this powerful, capable park ranger is ready and willing to answer the call for help!
