PSA: GNARBOX seems to be gone, leaving GNARBOX customers in the cold: Digital Photography Review
PetaPixel To be Report that GNARBOX seems to have died. The GNARBOX 2.0 SSD launched on Kickstarter in 2018 and allows users to back up photos and videos in the field, review and trim preliminary footage, filter and edit images, display selections, and more.
It’s not just a portable hard drive. Or, at least, it to be. The company seems to have gone into the dark, which leaves existing customers looking for support – and the application requested – in disarray. Without apps that have been removed from the App Store, new customers can’t really use all of the features the device promises. We have reached out to GNARBOX for comment but have yet to receive a response. We will update this post if we do.
What does GNARBOX 2.0 SSD promise? The device, which is still being sold by retailers like Amazon, Adorama and B&H, promises to take a step back in this area. You can perform certain functions with the device only by using the buttons and the on-board OLED display. Content can be backed up to the hard drive using one of the USB 3.0 Type-C ports or the built-in SD card reader. There is also an integrated micro-HDMI port. The waterproof, dustproof and shockproof device is built to a high standard.
Where GNARBOX sets itself apart from other portable hard drives is through connected mobile apps, which allow users to preview RAW images, select, edit and trim videos, and display files on the hard drive. . Problem is, that app is no longer available. If you just got a GNARBOX 2.0 SSD, you’re basically stuck with an expensive portable hard drive. The device costs $499 for the 256GB model, $599 for the 512GB model, and $899 for the 1TB version. By the way, that is without charger and battery.
Basically, buyers beware at this point. While we wait for the official word, which may never arrive, PetaPixel also pointed out that the company behind GNARBOX, Mygnar, Inc., has ‘lost’ status. It has had this status since late October.
Meanwhile, customers are concerned.
this @lensshark Do you know what’s going on with @GNARBOX? Apps are no longer available on the iOS/IPadOS App Store, and they seem to have been around quite a bit on social media since early November.
Great product that I hope won’t be a bunch of useless plastic if I can’t get the app anymore…

That is the main problem. Without the app, although somewhat functional, the device doesn’t deliver the promised features. Companies go out of business and products lose customer support, but not all products lose core functionality when the manufacturer disappears.
Too bad it’s just over two years after the GNARBOX 2.0 SSD Available at retailers worldwide, the device seems to have been out in the meadow. We hope that’s not the case, but you don’t need the app to know that the signs don’t look good.
