Proton sedan “S50” reimagined – Geely Emgrand base, Binyue facelift, honeycomb grille
Another day, another render from Photoshop wizard Theophilus Chin, this time a proposal Proton “S50” sedan. Eagle-eyed readers will remember that this is actually the third time the car has been envisioned, the first as a car. mash-up with Geely Binyue (which eventually became X50 SUV), then the all-new fourth generation Emgrand as a starting point.
This time, Theo put the two together, pairing the Emgrand body with the front end of the Upgrade Binyue (in 2021, not more extensive than nip-and-tuck was leaked earlier in the year). The two-tone bumper features body-colored “fangs” and a gray X-shaped center insert that visually connects the headlights to the upper and lower grilles.
Notably, the upper grille has a honeycomb grid pattern, not the usual Infinite Weave style of Proton. Geely was second use on one’s own carmost recent on a upgrade Jiaji MPV, was discovered in China earlier this month. It remains to be seen whether Proton will change its own design language.
Otherwise, it resembles the regular Emgrand, with sharp projector headlights, the usual three-box sedan styling, prominent chrome window strips and full-length taillights with undulating light guides. The spaced Proton script on the boot lid is the only change at the back.
However, it remains unclear whether Proton will use the Emgrand as the basis of its sedan, as the company says it will use its own platform for future models, allowing for a design differentiation from Geely vehicles. One downside to the Emgrand is the lack of any driver assistance systems such as automatic emergency braking, which means a considerable amount of work and money will be required to install these systems.
