For decades, the only option on most international flights was to upgrade to business class. Recently, many airlines have added a new product on long-haul flights that they call premium economy class (or a similar name reserved for their airline).
More seating options mean more prices and more benefits. That could be great in theory, but it’s important to understand what to expect in premium economy or business class. Let’s consider both.

What does the premium economy give you?
Premium Economy Class cabins are now much more widely available on international flights, especially on American Airlines, Delta Airlines and unified airline.
One of the biggest benefits of the premium economy is space. The typical premium economy class seat is not much larger than an economy class seat.

Where you will see the biggest difference is the distance between the seats around you. Usually, you will have a sizable armrest between you and the seat next to you. This means you won’t accidentally elbow your seatmate.

As airlines begin to adjust their offerings after the worst of the pandemic seems to have passed, premium economy meals have become a little more attractive.
However, it is important to set reasonable expectations. This is still an airline meal. On longer flights, you should prepare a hot meal initially. Many airlines offer similar menu items in both business class and premium economy class.
In the high-end economy, you probably won’t have many courses and may not have porcelain and silverware. However, the food must taste better than the food offered in economy class (if an economy class meal is even offered).
Most airlines offer a snack or second snack before landing on longer flights, although you may not be offered any other food during the flight.
The remaining benefits of the premium economy are unlikely to be a game changer but are good to behold. Airlines often prioritize check-in and boarding, but rarely offer lounge access.

What does business class give you?
The business class experience often begins before you even set foot on the plane. As you might expect, priority check-in and boarding are in most cases possible.

Meal more luxurious services in the high-end economy. The first meal of a flight is often multi-course and may even include side dishes such as caviar and dessert cart.

Price difference between premium economy class and business class
It can be quite expensive to rent some extra space on your next flight. While not always the case, the current difference between economy, premium and business class fares is one of the largest we’ve seen in a while. fairly long.

Bottom line: Should you upgrade?
By current standards, it can be quite expensive to buy premium economy or business class on your next flight abroad.
There are a few key factors to consider when making your decision. The length and duration of your flight should definitely be a factor.
The longer your flight, especially on an overnight flight, the more value you get from the extra space. This is obviously more valuable if you buy business class and can get a good night’s sleep while lying in bed, although you will likely pay dearly for this privilege.
If you’re flying from New York to Iceland for a short time, the high premium for business class makes much less sense.
How much the upgrade costs is also an important factor to consider.
Paying twice the price of an economy class fare for a slightly better meal and a little extra legroom can seriously cut your future travel budget.
Finally, another factor to consider is whether there is a more affordable way to do that upgrade.
