The 250cc class is shaping up to be a similar scenario to what was witnessed last year, where Honda’s Kyle Webster established a stronghold on the title early in the proceedings. Sure, this will be a longer season with all rounds (hopefully) completed, but the early signs are similar. Wilson Todd is back in Australia after “getting old” at the MX2 World Championship and is in outstanding form, taking four from four, so far a perfect card.

Todd may not have been as quick in qualifying, as he finished in fifth, but when the workday started at the gate drop point in the Pirelli MX2 class, he was on duty, taking the prize. ball and has since never taken the lead.

The same cannot be said for Serco Yamaha rider Jesse Dobson. After having the luck and privilege of taking the lead in the event, Dobson was the fastest in qualifying, but the orientation trip was fruitless as his day hit the opening lap, Dobson was fell to drop to second-last before he got up and started the never-ending battle as he once again raked the leaderboard to salvage the score.

Dobson’s Serco team-mate Bailey Malkiewicz also struggled early in the race, a mistake that left him in 14th place before he too had to return to the top of the table.

While Todd set the pace, the rest of the field was to the minors as Yamalube Yamaha teammates Alex Larwood and Rhys Budd tried bravely to keep the Honda rider in check. Budd finished second for most of the race after Larwood dropped to seventh in the opening lap. Budd finished third, ahead of Dylan Wills (Husqvarna Racing), and Queenslander Noah Ferguson, fourth and fifth respectively.

Leg two was slightly different as Dobson won the shooting award and led the opening two rounds against Todd and Malkiewicz. Dobson then had a bit of a hiccup that sent him down to fourth behind Wills as Wilson Todd took the lead. The gap to second varied from three to five seconds as Serco Yamaha teammates battled each other for the last two places on the podium.

Malkiewicz was ahead of his teammate for most of the race, but Dobson overtook him by a little over four laps. Malkiewicz tried everything to regain position but was thwarted when a couple of counter-markers cut across the pair, giving Dobson the cushion he needed to take second, Malkiewicz third. Larwood fourth and Wills fifth.

Apparently, Todd once again won the day in dominant form against Larwood, with Malkiewicz in third, while Wills and Budd tied for fourth, a single point behind rider Serco Yamaha.

With his four from four, Todd has a 16-point title lead over Larwood, with Malkiewicz over 11 points in third overall.

Bailey Malkiewicz – P3

“Every day on the podium is a good thing so I can’t complain too much. The first moto that I couldn’t ride when it was in the last laps. I worked hard to join the fight but then I didn’t continue it when it was necessary. The second time was better and although Jesse helped me at the end, I think I maintained a more steady pace and I feel better on the bike. We have a few weeks left before round 3 so we’re looking forward to getting back to work and trying to improve this result at Albury. ”

Dylan’s Will – P4

“Today was definitely better than the first round, but I will try and focus on a new strategy for the qualifiers so I can start the day with a better door pick. That said, I still have two good starts. I raced pretty firmly in the first race and made two really good laps and I could see I was starting to take the lead, but with not racing I got too excited, the moisture came in. me, and in the end I only survived to the end. I had another good start in the second race, but I didn’t have a few percent more than the leaders, so be realistic with yourself and go home with some good points. ”

Rhys Budd – P5

“Moto one is amazing, and it’s great to get back to the front and fight to win the race. I had Wilson in sight all the races and just the moto I needed to get things rolling. Moto two isn’t great but over the course of a day it has improved a lot compared to lap one and I feel like things are coming up. The next races are good for me, so I hope to build on the momentum here and put myself on the podium and move forward in the championship fight. ”

Jesse Dobson – P6

“It was a crazy day. Great start, passed by a few times and ended well. I’m still trying to figure out how I can equip that much in one day. Qualifiers were awesome, moto one was rowing and the results were horrible and then I went back on moto two only to crash and finish second. I ride very well and I didn’t realize that I had a slight flaw in my two-wheeler that I was able to go with the flow and not feel pressured. But, regardless of the results, I think I have the speed to match everyone and I just need to clean up a few things to be able to do the right hunt. ”
