Pickup truck aside, Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in the US

Promoted by Tesla discounts Earlier this year, the Model Y once again boosted sales in the United States, as indicated by this week’s subscription-based data from Experian.

According to the company, as quoted by auto newsregistration of Tesla Model Y nearly doubled (up 99%) from January to April 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. Meanwhile, Model 3 in the same period increased 28%.

As emphasized by Experian’s Automotive market trends reported for the first quarter of 2023, the Tesla Model Y was the second best-selling vehicle of any kind, behind only the Ford F-150.

That means Model Y, rated one of most vehicles are made in the UScurrently outselling Toyota Camry, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Corolla, Civic, Accord and others have dominated the sales charts.

Tesla maintains more than 60% of the U.S. electric vehicle market share, and electric vehicles currently account for about 7% of total U.S. vehicle sales. The Tesla Model 3 and Model Y combined accounted for nearly 4% of new vehicle registrations in the US during the quarter.

That makes the US fleet look more and more like California, where Tesla has dominated. It accounts for 78% of electric vehicle sales by 2022, and electric vehicle sales account for about 20% of total sales.

But the entire U.S. fleet turns around slowly, and the average age of passenger cars and light trucks is still around 12 years. In the first quarter of 2023, electric vehicles accounted for 2.4 million total vehicle registrations in the United States (including electric vehicles of all ages)—just 0.86% of total vehicles. While that’s only a tiny fraction of the entire fleet, that’s more than double the 0.40% of the fleet’s total EVs added in Q1 2021.

Hybrid vehicles are also evolving in the fleet structure, although they do not accelerate at the rate that EVs do relative to the overall fleet. They totaled about 7.3 million units, or more than 2.5% of the total fleet in Q1 2023, up from just over 2% of the total fleet in Q1 2021.
