Photoshop’s Great AI Feature to Rescue and Improve Poor, Low-Quality Images

A new year and another Photoshop AI feature to get excited about. This time, we’re going to look at how you can take poor, low-quality images with small file sizes and lots of ugly artifacts and turn them into images of such quality that you can consider printing them.

During last December, I played a lot with different AI engines. As it happened, we had a professional development session at my workplace where AI was discussed in an educational context. While it is mainly related to academic writing, a lot of other AI capabilities have been covered, including photography and art. The general consensus among my colleagues is that AI is here and it’s not going anywhere, so we need to understand how to work with it, rather than against it.

And that brings us to this amazing video by Unmesh Dinda from PiXimperfect, in which he showcases another AI feature in the latest version of Photoshop. As with most of Photoshop’s AI features, it’s in the Neural Filters section, which can be found in the Filters drop-down menu. When you open it up, at the bottom you’ll see JPEG Artifacts Removal. You just turn it on, choose whether you want it (high, medium or low), then let Photoshop do its job. It can be quite intensive on your computer, but the results on many of the photos I tested were astounding, including iPhone photos that had a lot of grain and noise. There is also advice on how to correct extreme banding. Watch the video to see it in action and how you can apply it. What do you think about AI?
