Washington – Please see the following statement by PETA scientist Jeffrey Brown regarding the newly confirmed US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner, Dr. Robert Califf. Science Foundation PETA International eV welcomed Califf today with a alphabet asked him to steer the agency toward accepting modern, animal-free science instead of requiring animal testing for new medical treatments. The Scientific Association thanked the new commissioner for expressing support for the shift toward using non-animal methods during his confirmation hearings. Califf’s previous experience as an FDA commissioner from 2016 to 2017 will benefit developing animal-free science to improve public health.
Dr. Robert Califf wants a better FDA, and so does PETA. Califf has supported the rapid development of safe drugs through innovative proposals. As we begin our term, we will highlight the long list of complex proposals the agency can make to achieve its goals and save animals, including supporting FDA Modernization Act and expanding programs that led to the development of a COVID-19 vaccine in record time. There is a better path for humans and animals. We hope Califf sees the same.
