Oscar De La Hoya on Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia contract: “The deadline for me is Monday”

So it looks like the Gervonta Davis-Ryan Garcia superfight that was set for April wasn’t really set after all. “I don’t have a contract,” Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya tweeted on Sunday, “the deadline for me is Monday or I’ll move on. #DavisGarcia.” Suffice it to say, speculation has been rampant, with some suggesting the fight will never happen, while others suggesting that De La Hoya is simply playing the negotiating game here. The truth, however, is that a contract was never signed for a match hoped for for Davis-Garcia. All talk of the war being set up, while extremely promising, always sounded at least a little empty.
Not much hope for the bout has failed. The truth is that all that can go on here is conventional boxing politics. However, the tweet from De La Hoya certainly did not leave fans with a good feeling. For what it’s worth, both Davis and Garcia at least ostensibly really want the match to happen. If both really do, then it will happen. And if not – it’s just more bad news for a sport that regularly disappoints fans. This time, however, the news will be particularly serious, showing that boxing is no longer an attempt for the world to figure out who is the best boxer.
