We only driving a Mercedes-AMG SL 2022 first time, but Mercedes wasted no time preparing the convertible’s sister car: Mercedes-AMG GT Car coupe. We call these people brothers and sisters, because both SL and AMG GT built on the same chassis and developed by the people at AMG. Mercedes decided to launch the convertible first, leaving the hardtop AMG GT to follow.
This shoot spies showing an AMG GT prototype is the first time we’ve seen this next-generation vehicle, which makes it all the more exciting. To our satisfaction, the tester appeared to be quite far in the testing phase – it wore production headlights and taillights. The front proportions come as no surprise, as it largely looks like the SL from the hood on. We will note that the GT has a typical AMG grille. However, besides the grille, Mercedes has carefully covered the front end to keep its styling secret.
From the windshield at the rear, the AMG GT is a monster of its own, and it looks good at that point. The roofline falls down elegantly to the rear, and while it doesn’t look like an exact replica of the current AMG GT, the concept remains the same. The rounded, ultra-compact rear end looks great with the camouflage removed – we can’t wait to see it.
Many details are exactly what we are used to with AMG today. The quad exhaust at the rear sends out the roar of a twin-turbo V8. The wheels are a recent AMG design with the circular interior being the main attraction – we drove a GLB 35 with a similar wheel design. Hiding behind those wheels seems to be the norm brake, not optional carbon ceramic. We were so excited about color is also an option, as this AMG GT has a vibrant yellow color, exposed on the roof, small cuts on both the bumper and under the retractable rear spoiler.
We don’t know exactly when Mercedes will reveal this AMG GT, but we suspect it will be relatively soon. There’s a good chance it debuts in the 2023 model year here, which means our wait won’t be long.
