New Kid on the Block: Super73’s C1X electric motorbike
We’ve got ours keep an eye on the Super73 for a while. California Company Electric Bicycle bold and exciting, bridging the gap between bicycles and motorcycles to focus on accessible two-wheeler mobility. Now they’ve bumped it up a few Watts with the reveal of the Super73 C1X concept.
The C1X is Super73’s attempt to add a powerful electric motorcycle to their already popular line of e-bikes. So it has no pedals, can go 75 mph (confirmed) and requires a motorbike license to go. Plus, it looks rad as well.
Super73 designed the C1X in response to direct feedback from their customer base. They found that a third of their current riders wanted to step onto a street-legal motorcycle. So while other motorcycle manufacturers are trying to figure out how to get new riders on two wheels, Super73 is looking for ways to keep them in the fold.
Because it’s designed as a next step for riders already using e-bikes smaller than the Super73, the C1X is intentionally compact. It actually has the same proportions as their current flagship e-bike, the RX, and there’s even a nifty interactive tool on their website that allows you to compare your height with your size. size of the bike.
To that end, the Super73’s design team started by studying current production motorcycles, to find out what aspects of them deter potential new riders from taking the plunge. A smaller overall footprint became one of their top priorities — informing many of their design decisions.
That’s why the C1X rolls on 15″ disc wheels, instead of the more common 17″ rims. The engine is also located just behind the swinging point of the swingarm, bringing the wheelbase down to 51” and eliminating potential issues of chain slack. It’s a fascinating design and we’re curious to see in action.
We’re also fans of the C1X’s visual design. We’re collecting supermoto vibes, flat trackers and strong BMX, with clean lines and fresh skin tones. The raised subframe is a neat touch, and the sleek LED lighting adds to the overall minimalism that the designers of the Super73 have clearly aimed for.
That chunky block in the middle hides the battery and also gives a hint of the C1X’s engineering. Super73 doesn’t reveal too many details, but mass-focused quoting is the reason behind the layout.
The company also doesn’t cite any numbers beyond its 75 mph top speed, 100 mile range, and fast-charging system that should get the battery to 80% in less than an hour. All of those numbers carry the usual disclaimer “results may vary,” but they help determine who C1X is targeting.
This is an urban run, through – small, easy to park and probably very easy to walk. Between its proportions and the typical convenience-to-move of an e-bike, it has all the convenience of a scooter but with much more street credit.
Super73 says that the design process for the C1X started over a year ago, but it will probably be a while before it’s ready to hit the market (they’re aiming for late 2023).
The C1X is a bold move from the Super73, but we can see it working – provided the price tag is right. No word on that yet, but the $73 refundable deposit guarantees you a spot – which is much less cheeky than some of the pre-release deposits we’ve seen. see.
The C1X isn’t the only new model the Super73 wraps up this week. Download the new Super73 Youth Series — pint-sized e-bikes just for kids. A $100 deposit guarantees you a pre-order price of $995, and it’s set to launch later this year.
The Youth Line is another take on existing customer feedback. Super73 realizes that a lot of their riders have young families and want to cut the family down to their preferences. This is all the more emphasized during the COVID-19 pandemic, where families are suddenly spending more time together than usual — and there is a need to get out.
Specially designed for children aged four to eight years old, the Super73 Youth Series features a motorcycle-inspired seat and adjustable foot controls to accommodate different rider heights.
The styling is inspired by the Super73’s existing e-bikes and enhanced with BMX and motocross cues. It looks great in all four colors it’s offered in, and we wish Super73 would release an adult version of it.
Highlights include a lightweight aluminum frame that’s easily portable (any parent knows that’s going to happen a lot) and a removable battery. We also love the flat racetrack seats and fat two-tone tires, and utilitarian enthusiasts are sure to smile when they see the rear fender inside.
Super73 has cleverly added a red handle to the throttle control, to clearly communicate its usage to first-timers. And the capacity is adjustable, so that parents can adjust it for their children. Despite its size and intended audience, the Super73 ensures that it uses the same level of component specs as their other bikes.
A recurring theme in our recent discussion groups on electric motorcycles, it is resistance to them largely due to nostalgia for gasoline fuel. Another opinion is that the growth of the market will be driven by younger riders – people who ride e-bikes at a young age and therefore will not have such a mentality. And Super73 understands this well.
Both the C1X and the Youth Series are not only visually similar, but they also fill two very specific niches within the larger motorcycle market. We’re excited to see how this turns out — and we’re excited for a ride.
