My mom fell in love with these 9 trends in the ’80s and so do I now

My mother and her friend wore Laura Ashley dresses to their 1984 wedding.

Not too long ago, Urban dressers debuted with its partnership with iconic ’80s brand Laura Ashley. I’ll be completely honest: It wasn’t until I showed my mom and aunt those pieces that I realized how iconic the brand is — especially for my mom and her discerning group of friends. . Immediately, my mother showed me the photo above of her and one of her best friends wearing a Laura Ashley dress to their 1984 wedding. How did I react? Of course, by searching for Laura Ashley dresses on Etsy and ordering one for yourself.

The runways always looking to the time when the festival is the ’80s, and if a return to this decade is anything like of the 90s, the rise of trends from this point on is just beginning. While the runways are definitely where I get my inspiration for thinking about the future, I’ve decided when it comes to ’80s trends, I’ll go back to the fashion queen of her day: my mom. She and my aunt are called ” Vogue sisters” in high school, so it must be worth it.

I asked her to list all the trends from the 80s that she thinks I might still be following today. Some of the styles on her list were quickly cut from mine, including headbands, colored resin beads, and a few others that I didn’t want to mention. But as for the rest of her picks, I have to say they’re pretty decent. Ahead, shop nine of the ’80s fashion trends my mom wore back today — trends that are still going great in 2022.

“Overall, shoulder pads and box shoulders are a staple of the ’80s, and I’m perfectly fine with that. The structure they make a shirt or blazer with is the look you’ve got to have. I think they’re oddly flattering, as they make your shoulders wider than your hips, which is never a bad thing.

“The jumpsuits were my favorite in the ’80s. They make dressing easy and I always feel fashionable when I wear them. I love that they make me look tall like that. Come on. Those with large shoulder pads are even more flattering.”

“When I started working in the ’80s, wearing suits and boots was a thing. To make a sturdier look more trendy, one trend was to combine head-to-toe, including including the color of your shoes. I must be wearing heels. Pumps in every color. Neutrals are not a thing.. And of course, pumps match hoses, match suits, etc. “

Okay, this is not a prairie dress, but a must-see photo.

“Another trend that I really love. These ’80s dresses are what we wear to any special event. They’re so feminine, pretty, and flattering. They make a statement. your waistline looks smaller.”

“Colored and patterned faucets really make an outfit look complete. If you take the time to perfectly match the color of the faucet to your outfit, or wear a small polka-dot faucet to match. If you match the print on the dress, you have succeeded.”

“So scrunchies are another ’80s accessory that you can pair with your outfit. I have them in every color because you have to. We needed them to tie up her big permed hair. We’re going to wear them around our wrists also for random hair changes, and we can do that because of course they match our outfits.”

“We all wore high-waisted, acid-washed pleated jeans in the ’80s. This trend still annoys me. It’s not flattering, but I guess it proves we’re loyal to our brand. this trend. Big bags are a plus, though.”

“The key to a stylish denim jacket in the ’80s is wash and shape. If it’s not an acid wash or a light wash, with its large dolman sleeves and covering your butt, it’s not going to impress. anyone.”

This is my mom and dad in acid washed denim. I’m not entirely sure I’m ready for this to come back.

“Every piece of the 80’s was designed to make a big statement. So I also wear giant glasses. Everything, including the accessories, has to be big or it’ll be engulfed by the crowd. the size of our big curls.”
