Missouri community rescues horses trapped in collapsed barn after tornado tore through area
Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi and Tennessee suffered deadly tornadoes over the weekend. More than 70 people have been killed in Kentucky alone.
Communities are working together to dig through debris to find survivors after powerful storms razed homes and businesses.
Firefighters, EMS crews, veterinarians, and residents in St. Charles, Missouri, rushed to help horses trapped in a collapsed stable.
“It has been confirmed that there are five horses in the barn and four of them are visible, alive and badly trapped. The crew worked carefully to dissect the barn with saws and sleds,” posted New Melle Fire District.
The rescue lasted five hours as crews combed through the debris. Five veterinarians were on the scene to administer sedation and examine the horses.
“One by one, we were able to free all the horses alive,” they said.
Sadly, one horse died when the barn collapsed, and another died after being rescued.
The Mid-Rivers Equine Center worked with veterinarians from Homestead Veterinary Hospital to create a makeshift emergency hospital that, thanks to lighting provided by the fire department, will care for three animals. horse survived.
