Mirage of Electric Vehicles – Watts Up With That?

Guest posts by Willis Eschenbach

For those of you who think electric cars make a difference… think again.

The Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory has just announced a research shows that by 2021, privately owned U.S. plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) “have saved approximately 690 million gallons of gas.”

But that’s a huge exaggeration because fossil fuels provide 61% of the electricity in the United States…so only about a third of that apparent savings is a real reduction in fossil fuel use. , equivalent to about 130 million gallons.

The Argonne report also says that between 2010 and 2021, electric vehicles have saved 2.1 billion gallons of gas. So let’s be generous to say that in 11 years, electric vehicles have saved about a third of that, which equates to about 750 million gallons of gas.

Now that sounds like a lot of gasoline, three-quarters of a billion gallons.

However, as always, a sense of perspective is required. The United States uses about 370 million gallons of gas per day…so that’s only enough for two days.

I said again. Over the past 11 years, electric vehicles in the US have saved Two. day. Valuable. Of the. Gasoline.

Hmm…

And how much does that cost?

Direct electric vehicle tax subsidies cost you and me 10 billion dollars so farand we’re trying to learn more. The government has just extended the EV subsidy until 2032 and removed the limit on the number of vehicles eligible for the subsidy.

It got worse. The US government also just approved an additional $7.5 billion in tax dollars for electric vehicle charging stations.

So, so far, we’re spending Twenty-Three DOLLARS for every gallon of gas saved… economic suicide.

Who is benefiting from this crazy waste of taxpayers’ money? Of course the richest 20% of the US population. Surely you don’t think the actions of climate activists will benefit the poor?

According to research from the University of California at Berkeley, 90% of tax credits go to the top US income quintile. One May 2019 Congressional Research Service The report found that 78% of tax credit recipients have adjusted gross income of $100,000 per year or more.

On top of that, we have to consider the fact that the $7,500 per electric vehicle subsidy is a tax credit, not a direct payment… so unless you pay more than $7,500 in Federal taxes, You will not receive the full credit. For those with lower incomes, this means they can only get a kilobuck or more. How upside down is that? The richer you are, the bigger the subsidy you get when you buy a sparkly car that runs mostly on fossil fuels! What did you say?

It’s just a money transfer scam to benefit the rich. Middle- and lower-class people are paying for electric cars that signal the vanity of doctors, CEOs, lawyers and politicians.

And how are electric cars selling? This is how people think they are selling, compared to how they are actually selling.

Note that the electric car data in the image above (yellow/black line) is the same in both tables…

However, there is a much bigger problem with electric vehicles—we are rapidly running out of both the generating capacity and the grid capacity to recharge them. California can’t even turn on the lights, and our crazy Governor’s response is to ban the sale of gas-powered cars after 2035…

… and meanwhile, Switzerland had to bite the EV . bullet. If the current energy shortages in Europe continue, they plan to ban electric vehicles from any activity except “essential” journeys this winter…

Not only that, moving towards a completely electric “no electricity” economy by 2050, as many advocates, is economically, physically and politically impossible. I discuss this in my post”Bright blue impossible“.

The problem with electric cars is that they are an extremely expensive imaginary solution to an imaginary problem. There is no “climate crisis”, it’s just a lie to scare people into compliance. I go over the facts in my post”Where is the climate emergency?“. I posted it all over the web and no one found a single flaw in it.

Unless we can stop the frenzied war on fossil fuels, it will bankrupt us all, drive up energy costs, and send low-income people shivering during the winter. and deprive poor countries of the energy they need to lift themselves out of severe poverty. For details on how this plays out at the bottom of the economic ladder, see my post “We met 1% and he is us“.

Grum…

As always: I ask that when you comment, you quote exactly the words you are discussing. This avoids endless misunderstandings about what and who is being discussed.
