Mercedes-Benz EQS is World Luxury Car of the Year 2022 – EV beats BMW iX and Genesis GV70


The World Car Awards 2022 saw Mercedes-Benz EQS was named World Luxury Car of the Year 2022. The automaker’s flagship EV sedan won the category with 789 points, finishing ahead of the other two finalists, BMW iX (784 points) and Genesis GV70 (752 points).

The EQS win makes it second in a row for Mercedes in the category, as W223 S-Class win title last year. The brand has had quite a bit of success in the Luxury Awards segment – since the category started in 2014, it has won five of its nine titles, including this year.

Globally, the EQS is available in three regular variants. There’s a base EQS 350 engine, where a single rear electric motor makes 215 kW (292 PS) and 565 Nm of torque, while the EQS 450+ bumps power up to 245 kW (333 PS).

Meanwhile, the EQS 580 4Matic comes with twin engines to provide all-wheel drive and total system output of 385 kW (523 PS) and 855 Nm. There’s also the AMG EQS 53 4Matic+, which delivers up to 560 kW (761 PS) of power and 1,020 Nm of peak torque. The car is expected to be launched in Malaysia, appeared on the website of Mercedes-Benz Malaysia last month, when the company started registering interest for it.

Desire World Car of the Year title for the year 2022 has come Hyundai Ioniq 5the all-electric hatchback finished first Kia EV6the 2022 Car of the Year in Europe winner and Ford Mustang Mach-E. The Ioniq 5 also won the World Electric Car of the Year title in 2022 (where it surpassed the EQS as well as the Audi e-tron GT) and the Design Car of the Year title in 2022.
