Memorial day weekend forecast is complicated. Are These Weekends Better or Worse?
My podcast today (see below for access), will describe the dynamic and varied weather that will hit the area this weekend. But there’s more to it: I’ll talk about the history of Memorial Day Weather Weekend and how it represents the transition to June Weather.
A key feature this weekend is an unusually strong center of low pressure that will make landfall on the Oregon coast Saturday afternoon (see below), with moderate rain over Oregon and strong winds along the coast. If you’re on vacation in Oregon this weekend…sorry.
Surface weather map at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Rainfall will be abundant over Oregon, as illustrated by the 48-hour total ending at 5 a.m. Monday. Oregon and northern California need moisture.
Monday will be much better.
My podcast also covers the Memorial Day Weekend weather trends. Consider rainfall at SeaTac Airport for the total of 25-30 May over the past 70 years. Not much of a trend, but it’s clear that many of these weekends are wet (and only about 10% dry).
Temperature? Here are the maximum temperatures for Memorial Day Weekend in Seattle. Lots of variation, but the trend is slightly down. There hasn’t been much signal about global warming so far.
