Cliffs Mass Weather Blog: Winter Precipitation in Spring

One of the problems with being a meteorologist is that you have to deal with bad weather twice: once with the forecast and again when you have bad weather.

And the suffering is getting worse and worse.

Tomorrow will be the last dry day in a long time, and this May will end with more suitable rainfall for February.

Let me show you the bleak 48-hour story.

Wednesday will be mostly dry, but Thursday will be wet, with a total of 48 hours of rain ending at 5 a.m. Friday (below) showing a mildly atmospheric river flowing off the coast of Thailand. Binh Duong, with rain intensifies over the mountains.

Over the next 48 hours, rainfall increased over Oregon, with some locations receiving over 2 inches (see below)

Over the next 7 days, the total is…well…very unfortunate, with some mountainous areas 3 to 5 inches taller. Lots of times of the year, but unusual for May.

Eastern Washington has had a lot of rain, especially in the “extreme drought” area from Yakima to Lake Moses. Rivers are also above normal in the drought warning area.

Now what’s really sad is that there’s usually a big warm wave in mid-May, one that always comes around like clockwork. But not this year.

Do you want to experience 70F or higher in the next few weeks? Go to Hawaii.

Central Europe’s latest extended temperature forecast predicts much colder than normal conditions by the end of June (see below, blue is below normal). Unbelievable.

Cold and wet through May, with a thick layer of snow and ice, has major positive effects on bushfire season, which I will discuss in a future blog.
