Manchester United’s Anthony Martial will miss Saturday’s Premier League clash with Southampton due to Achilles problems, coach Erik ten Hag said on Friday, as the French forward’s injury problems continue to affect influenced his start in the campaign.
Martial missed United’s opening season defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion and a heavy loss to Brentford before coming on as a substitute against Liverpool on Monday, where he assisted Marcus Rashford in the win 2-1 raised their spirits.
“Martial doesn’t fit. He comes out with the problem on his Achilles, so we have to wait,” Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Saturday’s game at St Mary’s Stadium.
“I can’t say in advance how long it will take but we hope he will be available for the next game against Leicester City.”
New United signing Casemiro watched from the Old Trafford stands as United overcame Liverpool and the former Real Madrid midfielder could make his club debut at Southampton.
“Casemiro is suitable. He did all the rehearsals. He trains first as an individual and in the last days he trains with the team,” added Ten Hag.
“The morale was good, but it’s even better now (after Monday’s win). But it’s just a game, so we have to build more, we have to grow, and everyone is aware of that.
“We need to have a high standard. It is a requirement for the group. Now they see what the rewards are, so we have to match between runs in and out of possession. We need to run and move if you want to control a game. “
United have been contacted by the British media for the signing of Ajax Amsterdam striker Antony before the transfer window closes on September 1.
“We need the right players but we need the right players,” added Ten Hag. “The whole transfer window, we’re happy with what we’ve done so far, but the bar has to be high.”
