“Obviously two great champions,” undisputed women’s lightweight champion Katie Taylor said on Tuesday Performance today. “The best in the world face each other.” The best people Taylor talked about were herself and Amanda Serrano, the five-timer to whom Taylor will defend her crown before Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. “We’re going to get in and do what we have to do to really win the war,” she said. “We don’t train to lose, we train to win skirmishes, we’re both great champions.”
Serrano, who appeared on the show with Taylor, pointed out the importance of this weekend’s fight. “I have always loved breaking records, making history,” said Serrano, “so to be in this iconic event, to share the ring with Katie Taylor, another amazing champion, the undisputed champion. Undisputed champion, undefeated champion, it is truly an honor that we are having Madison Square Garden in the spotlight for the first time. ”
Neither boxer appeared surprised by the sheer size of Saturday’s bout. Never before has a women’s war of this nature been considered a major event in a grand venue. “Madison Square Garden!” Serrano was surprised. “It’s almost sold out and they say people don’t want to see women fighting. That tells you something completely different, so it’s awesome.” As far as Taylor is concerned, the battle with Serrano will be the biggest moment in a career filled with outstanding moments.
“I was lucky enough to have a great career,” she said, “but I think that Saturday night is going to be the best night of my life and everything is going to pale in comparison to what is about to come. out.” Serrano also expressed similar sentiments. “I’m doing this for Latina’s,” she said, “and this is the first time Puerto Rico has been able to have an undisputed champion…one of my goals is to be an undisputed champion. argumentative.”
While it’s clear that neither fighter has a personal relationship with the other, both women said Saturday will not be a festival of love. “This is a business, and we understand that,” said Serrano, “but when we walked into that ring, she had what I wanted and she had what she wanted to keep. So that’s a whole different story coming on Saturday night. After all, there’s a reason why both Serrano and Taylor are as successful as they are, and there’s a reason their fight gets the attention — because it’s worth it.
