JFK Airport Terminal 1 is closed after a disruptive power outage

Terminal 1 – served by Air France, China Eastern, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Norse Atlantic Airways and Swiss, among many other airlines – remained closed on Friday after an “electrical problem” resulted in a blackout on Thursday.

In a statement on Twitter, the airport said: “JFK Terminal 1 will remain closed on February 17 due to electrical problems as the Port Authority continues to work with the terminal operator to restore operations. fly as fast as possible. Travelers should check with airlines for flight status before arriving at the airport.”

The problem at one of the busiest US airports began on Thursday – the result of an electrical panel failure.

According to the statement, the incident not only caused a power outage, but also caused “a small fire that was isolated during the night but was immediately extinguished”.

Terminal 1 of “the ability to accept domestic and foreign flights” was affected, with some flights being diverted to other JFK terminals.

Some flights were diverted to other US airports along the East Coast, while some were forced to turn around in the air to return to their original airports.

Among them was a Korean Air flight from Seoul’s Incheon International Airport (ICN) and an ITA Airways flight to Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP), both of which had taken off a few hours.

The most unlucky thing, however, was Air New Zealand Flight ANZ2 from Auckland Airport (AKL) to JFK.

Its passengers made a smooth crossing of the Pacific Ocean before their flight returned to AKL. In the end, they spent 16 fruitless hours in the air, and the majestic face was captured by Flightradar24.
