Jaime Munguia: “I want to fight with [Jermall] Charles”

Jaime Munguia is using his upcoming competition with D’Mitrius Ballard as a way to continue his middleweight growth.

Since dropping the 154-pound WBO title in 2019, the Mexican product has slowly but surely moved up the middleweight ladder. Officially, Munguia had a perfect victory with a score of 4-0, with three of those matches being extra time. Tomorrow night, at the Plaza Monumental in Tijuana, Mexico, Munguia will continue her victorious path.

For now, betting professionals are fully expecting Munguia to take care of the business. While he can be considered a pretty big favorite, the 25-year-old doesn’t come into the competition with Ballard with an arrogant personality.

A less-than-attractive performance could lead to Munguia’s first career defeat and drop to the top of a middleweight mountain. Whether he should do what many expect, however, Munguia believes he’s given enough time to get used to the 160-pound landscape. As long as everything goes according to plan, Munguia will keep an eye on a certain good knockout from Houston, Texas, who happens to hold the WBC middleweight belt.

“I want to fight Charlo,” Munguia said in a recent interview with KO Artist Sports. “It will be an interesting fight for the people.”

As for the young candidate, if a confrontation with Charlo is really what he wants, he will have little or no difficulty securing said match. Currently, Munguia is occupying the number one position in the WBC group. Although a contest against Charlo may be lurking, the Houston native has other ideas.

The 31-year-old is secretly hoping an agreement can be reached between him and the current undisputed super-middleweight champion, Canelo Alvarez. If the two sides finalize the deal, Charlo will move up to 168 pounds to challenge the pound-for-pound star.

Until Charlo’s future plans are resolved, Munguia will continue to assert his position to claim his world championship title.
