It’s April Fools’ Day, these are the best gags we’ve seen
April Fools’ Day seems to be liked and disliked almost equally, but if it’s done well, it can at least get us thinking. “huh, that would be great if that’s true” or even smile.
We’ve looked at some of the Nintendo-themed pranks and games from this year, and there are a ton of different ones. Lots of things make you roll your eyes at infinity, but there are some good ones too!
All of the ones below have some links to Nintendo games, so let’s go to it.
We will update this list with more as the day goes on…
Best April Fools’ Day 2022 video games
‘Stack’ switch – Vooks
This is one of the first to appear this year thanks to the support of Vooks. It certainly qualifies as a good one, with a good model and a concept that would actually be quite nifty if it existed. The idea is that a new dock would let you mount up to 12 game cartridges at a time, then swap between them easily on the Switch. It’s like an old fashioned CD exchanger, but better.
It’s not a completely realistic idea, but it’s an idea that we would like on card.
SEGA’s Sonic Frontiers Limited Edition – Sonic.Sega.jp
This caught our attention thanks to @Nibellion on Twitter, with the actual ‘product page’ showing an impressive amount of effort. The joke is perhaps unthinkable that the meme-obsessed Sonic marketing team actually has a version like this for Sonic Frontiers – it has a ‘high quality’ bath, a silk scarf, a waterproof Mega Drive, a Game Gear (cannot be used in water) and a duck.
Hey, we’ll consider buying it.
Nintendo ‘Flex’ – @Retro_Dodo
Here’s another product that would, indeed, be great. The culmination is that Nintendo is unveiling ‘Flex’ to tackle the challenge of the popular Analogue Pocket. It will play Game Boy / Game Boy Color / Game Boy Advance cartridges, connect online for trades and downloads, have a fingerprint reader (for some reason), and charge wirelessly. It’s an interesting and kudos thing about design.
Yes, we will also consider buying this one.
Bearitron switchable display – LaserBear.net
This is a site that actually sells cases to make modern monitors look like old fashioned CRTs, just because some of us are old and can’t be ignored. This April Fools’ Day is ‘more than a ‘mere case of having some (fake) magic technology of a ‘flexible’ display. It has a “fanciful mechanism that allows the screen to transform from a completely flat panel to Trinitron’s iconic barrel shape”, called the ‘Bearitron’.
New blood game development ‘delayed’ until 2023
The new blood game brings us pretty cool things sunset on Switch last year and is definitely a publisher and developer to watch. The bottom line is that it had to postpone all of its development work to next year as its team was all too busy with competition. Elden Ring. While that’s a decent joke, we suspect some people in the real world let the actual work slip while playing the wildly hyped title from FromSoftware.
We also like the ‘Twitter announcement’ format – CD Projekt Red has a lot to offer.
Those are some of the highlights from this year’s April 1 festival; Be sure to share some of your favorites in the comments – we’ll be adding favorites above throughout the day. If any truly better comes out, that is.
