Photographer or filmmaker’s equipment is perhaps one of the most hotly debated topics, as anyone familiar with photography forums can tell you. There are arguments for and against the “completely stacked” or “minimalist” approach. Dan Mace has both in this video.
“Your gears don’t matter” says this video’s thumbnail and then, Dan Mace trying to make two identical vlog style videos with dramatically different camera setups. The first setup is a well-equipped Arriflex 16SR3 16mm film camera introduced in the early 1990s, and the second is an updated iPhone 13 Pro Max. After comparing how the two cameras make their videos, explaining the process and the differences in formats, Dan went on to create these two vlogs.
In his attempt to create a vlog in the style of the 1970s, he started by creating a “Trolley” out of a shopping cart that allows the 16mm rig to be moved around comfortably. Quite extreme! Of course, the iPhone is just in his pocket. Dan shot the same vlog on these two different rigs and edited them to look alike. The film is scanned so that it can be edited on a computer, and the iPhone’s bokeh is used to recreate the shallow depth of field effect of the film camera.
In the end, he showed two films, both showing the same story, but shot with significantly different equipment. What do you think? Is the movie still relevant and is there any problem with your device?
