The series will include two stake races on each of the two race days at Racing Parx. One race per day will be for all 2-year-olds and the other for 2-year-olds.
In January, the PHBA board asked stud principals for suggestions on how to improve and develop the program. The Board of Directors acted immediately and overwhelmed the PA-Sired, PA-Bred Stallion Series idea presented by the racing committee.
“This is a collaborative effort between the PHBA and reaching out to those who know best what is the best way to attract new stallions and breed more mares in the state,” said PHBA president Greg Newell. . “Part (of this new series) is having an immediate impact, and part is encouraging people over the next three or four years to raise livestock in the state.”
All 2-year-olds with registered PA, hybrid PAs are automatically eligible. The stallion must be registered with the PHBA, and must be formed by a registered Pennsylvania stallion. As of 2022, there are no nomination, admission, or initiation fees.
The first races in the series will be held on Pennsylvania Day at the Race, August 22. Two sums of US$100,000 will be contested in 5 and a half segments.
One month later, PA-sired, PA-bred cubs will run for $200,000 in the Pennsylvania Derby Day card, September 24, with a 6 1/2 feather gap.
“I think this is the most exciting thing that has happened in Pennsylvania in terms of breeding and horse racing in the last 20 years,” said Bob Hutt, president of Uptowncharlybrown Stud, which owns and manages. The series will expand in 2023 with three-day stake PA-Sired, PA-Bred Stallion Series.
“We are getting (our 2-year-old stake schedule) progressing faster,” Newell said. “And these races would combine wonderfully with the existing PA-breeding staking schedule.
“This is not a once-a-year wonder,” Newell continued. “Our message is that anything related to livestock requires a long-term commitment to taking risks.
