LONDON –

The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned that Russia could completely cut off gas supplies to Europe to increase its leverage against the West in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Russia has severely restricted gas flows to Europe in recent days. The Kremlin blames equipment maintenance delays on European Union sanctions, while Europe accuses the Kremlin of playing geopolitics.

“Considering this recent behavior, I would not rule out that Russia continues to find various problems here and there and continues to find reasons to reduce gas supplies to Europe and even to Europe. could be cut off completely,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said in a statement to Reuters news agency. “This is why Europe needs contingency plans.”

Energy crisis

Tom Marzec-Manser, head of gas analysis for Independent Commodity Intelligence Services, said a complete cut on Russian gas would plunge Europe into an energy crisis.

“The gas supply from Russia right now – that is, the supply from the pipeline – is literally a quarter of what it was a year ago. So the volume is very, very low, and obviously that causes concerns. That means it will be much more difficult to rebuild the depots before the coming winter,” he told VOA.

IEA writes positive articles on renewable energy, visit their website.

However, the panic over Russia’s gas cuts is clear evidence that renewables are not a viable alternative to fossil fuels.

If a fraction of the money Europe wastes on renewables was spent on expanding nuclear power capacity, or developing fragile gas resources in Europe, Europe might have laughed at the Russia’s energy threat. Instead, the greenest country in Europe, Germany forced to restart their coal plants to offset the energy deficit caused by Russia’s geopolitical games.
